Box-office failure of ‘Byomkesh’ left me heartbroken: Dibakar

NEW DELHI, Aug 6:  Dibakar Banerjee is excited about taking forward the “Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!” series with a sequel but the director says the poor performance of the first film hurt him and the team.
The Sushant Singh Rajput-starrer, released in 2015, was based on author Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay’ famous creation, detective Byomkesh Bakshi.
Dibakar said the box-office result of the YRF movie was extremely important for him and he has realised releasing it with Hollywood action film “Furious 7” was not a wise decision.
“Its poor performance at the box-office left me heartbroken. Obviously, I wasn’t happy, nor was Adi (Aditya Chopra) and our team. I realised we shouldn’t have released it with ‘Fast and Furious’. That was not a good decision.
“It was important to establish the character properly for the audiences so that they connect with the sequel,” Dibakar said.
Nevertheless, the filmmaker will get back to Byomkesh’s world, though only after he is done with another project.
“I have finished writing my next film. I will soon start shooting it and after that I will go for ‘Byomkesh’ sequel. This was always the plan. Adi is very committed to the movie and we keep talking about it.”
When asked if the negative reviews of “Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!” raised doubt about the sequel, Dibakar said, “Never. It didn’t matter because that’s always the case with my films. Today people take ‘Khosla Ka Ghosla’ and ‘Oye Lucky Lucky Oye!’ in the same breath but when ‘Khosla Ka Ghosla’ released, people did not know how to categorise it.
“When ‘Shanghai’ came, people thought it’s some musical with Emraan Hashmi but they got something totally different and during ‘Love Sex Aur Dhokha’, they didn’t know what hit them! So mixed reviews are always the case with my movies.” (AGENCIES)
