Body of soldier missing after snow avalanche recovered in Ladakh

SRINAGAR: The body of a soldier, who went missing after a snow avalanche hit an Army patrol party yesterday, was retrieved in the Turtuk sector in Ladakh region, a Defence Minister spokesperson said here this evening.

Soldier Lance Havaldar Tamang had also died yesterday in the avalanche. The spokesperson said the mortal remains of Rifleman Sunil Rai, who was buried under snow after an avalanche that struck an Army patrol yesterday in the Turtuk Sector in Ladakh region, was recovered by rescue teams today.

He said the mortal remains of the soldiers are being evacuated from the area , after which, a wreath laying ceremony will be conducted to honour the martyrs. Thereafter, they will be transported by air to their native places where they will be accorded funerals with full military honours, he said.

Lance Havaldar Tamang is survived by wife, a six-year-old daughter and his parents, whereas Rifleman Sunil Rai is survived by his parents and two younger brothers. (AGENCIES)
