Jammu, May 2: Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (MICS) is a new hope for many such patients who have feared open heart surgery. Dr Ajay Kaul, a pioneer of MICS has introduced the technique for people of the state and is finding wide acceptance given its ease and effectiveness.
After performing many successful surgeries including in J&K, Dr Kaul, Chairman and HOD, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, BLK Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi, said he is confident this technique will redefine heart care.
Recently two men from J&K successfully underwent a heart surgery without much blood loss and any scare. “The case of Nazir Ahmed (50) and Gazanfar Ali on whom we performed MICS after they were diagnosed with heart ailments gives us the confidence to use this fine technique among other patients as well,” added Dr Kaul, a veteran of this new technique, and who has to his credit a staggering 5000 MICS surgeries.
Under MICS, heart surgery is performed through several small incisions instead of the traditional open-heart surgery that require a median sternotomy approach. MICS is also performed under direct vision. It causes much less blood loss, reduced post-operative discomfort, faster healing times and lowered risk of infections. Doctors also say that this procedure makes heart surgery possible for patients who were previously considered too high risk for traditional surgery due to age or medical history. Patients referred for this procedure may have Coronary Artery Disease (CAD), aortic, mitral or tricuspid valve diseases, or previous unsuccessful stenting.
