KATHUA, May 8: Police today claimed to have solved a blind murder case within 24 hours in Kathua district by arresting the accused and recovering the weapon of offence used in the crime.

Addressing media persons here, SSP Kathua, Mohita Sharma said that the case surfaced on May 6 after information was received at Police Station Kathua that two brothers, Nakul Singh (18) and Nikhil Singh (16), sons of Late Balbir Singh and residents of Ward Number 10 Kathua, were found critically injured inside their house.
She said both were shifted to GMC Kathua, where doctors declared Nakul Singh brought dead, while Nikhil Singh was referred to AIIMS Vijaypur for advanced treatment due to his critical condition.
Following the incident, the SSP Kathua said that an FIR Number 230/2026 under sections 103/109/333/115(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered at Police Station Kathua and further investigation started.
She said the investigating teams led by SHO Kathua and DSP Headquarters rushed to the spot, secured the crime scene and called the Forensic Science Laboratory team for examination.
During investigation, she said police found that the iPhone of the deceased was missing from the house.
As such, the police officer said that several suspects were rounded up and questioned, while the ESU team conducted technical and CDR analysis, which led investigators to suspect Parth Verma alias Sumit, a resident of Ward Number 9 Kathua.
She said sustained questioning of the accused led to his confession.
The missing iPhone of the deceased was also recovered on his disclosure in the presence of a magistrate, SSP Kathua, Mohita Sharma said.
According to the police officer, the accused had visited Nakul Singh’s house on May 6 and an argument reportedly broke out between the two over a love affair.
She said the altercation later turned violent when the accused allegedly attacked Nakul Singh with a cricket bat.
The SSP Kathua further said that when Nikhil Singh, the younger brother of deceased individual, entered the house, the accused allegedly assaulted him as well before fleeing with the victim’s phone.
She said the victims’ mother later returned home from the office and discovered her sons lying in the pool of blood before shifting them to the hospital.
SSP Kathua, Mohita Sharma said the cricket bat used in the crime has been seized and further investigation is underway.
