JAMMU, July 20: Launching drive ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ BJP State Committee organised a seminar on theme topic “Sirf Beta Hi Kyon Beti Kyon Nahin”, in Jammu Club here today in which gender bias and disparity towards upbringing of the girl child was highly criticised and its drawbacks highlighted. The speakers termed it as main reason for falling Chid Sex Ratio (CSR).
They said PM Narinder Modi has already given a call to nation to rise against it and frame a public opinion for the same.
Justice (Rtd) Permod Kohli, former Chief Justice of Sikkim High Court who was the chief guest said, “it’s ironic today the society has to talk of saving the girl child- the future mother – who is to give birth and she is to be saved from her very parents.” Referring to misinterpretation of religious beliefs amongst generally all religions, he said certain practices had come to be adopted which resulted in harmful gender divide. Banning women from performing last rites of parents, holding religious ceremonies in worship places had come to serve only the interest of particular section of functionarties and unfortunately the society came to accept them.
State general secretary (Org.) Ashok Kaul in his address, said staying connected to roots and the legacy was the only guaranty against ill practices or harmful effects of other cultures over the time.
S.S. Bijral retired IGP and State convener of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) in his address mentioned of sheer bias against women in society without basis. Mentioning of achievements of host of ladies around the world he said given proper upbringing and guidance women were as capable of delivering as the men.
Divisional Nodal Officer, National Human Mission Dr. Harjeet Rai, in his address, backed by projected slides highlighted the misuse of technology in harming child sex ratio.
Ms Richa Sabherwal Law Officer National Human Mission explained the various provisions of Pre-Conception & Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act 1994 also called PC&PNDT Act.
