SRINAGAR, Aug 4: Scores of BJP workers today staged a protest against the proposed construction of a shopping complex at the Tanchabagh Sumo stand in Pampore area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district, alleging that the project threatens the livelihood of hundreds of people dependent on the transport hub.

Chanting slogans, the protesters accused the National Conference-led Government of ignoring public welfare and claimed that the local MLA was pushing for the shopping complex despite the availability of alternate land. “There is a more suitable site for this project, but the authorities are bent on destroying this stand that supports nearly 500 families,” a BJP worker said.
Another protester said, “This is pure injustice. Replacing one public facility with another does not make sense. People here will lose their only means of income.”
The Sumo stand, a key transport point in the region, supports drivers, helpers, shopkeepers, and vendors who rely on daily operations for sustenance. Protesters alleged that the government had ignored their suggestions and even rejected their offer to provide alternate land for the complex.
Threatening to escalate the agitation, the BJP workers said they would launch a hunger strike at the site if the government failed to reconsider the decision. “We will not allow the government to seize this stand.” If needed, we will sit here day and night to protect our livelihood,” a protester warned.
The protesters demanded immediate intervention from the administration to halt the project and safeguard the livelihoods of those affected.
