JAMMU, Apr 20: J&K Minority Morcha president, Ranjodh Singh Nalwa, launched a sharp attack on the Congress Party, accusing it of consistently disrespecting Dr B R Ambedkar, the principal architect of the Indian Constitution. In contrast, he asserted, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has consistently taken steps to honour and uphold Dr Ambedkar’s legacy.
Addressing a gathering organized under the banner of Babasaheb Ambedkar Samman Abhiyan by the J&K Minority Morcha (JKMM) at Gangyal today, Nalwa urged BJP workers to counter what he described as the opposition’s “false narrative” regarding Dr Ambedkar, the Constitution, and the BJP. He called upon party cadre to spread awareness about the real contributions of the BJP in honouring Ambedkar’s legacy.
“Dr Ambedkar played a pivotal role in drafting the Hindu Code Bill – a significant attempt to reform and codify Hindu personal laws, thereby granting increased rights to women, especially in areas concerning inheritance, marriage, and divorce. Unfortunately, this landmark bill faced staunch resistance from within his own party, the Congress, and ultimately failed to pass in its original form as envisioned by Ambedkar,” Nalwa explained.
Former MLC Charanjit Singh Khalsa echoed similar sentiments, accusing the opposition of exploiting Dr Ambedkar’s name for political gain without genuinely respecting his contributions. “Today they brandish copies of the Constitution, but during their tenure in power, they blatantly violated it. The imposition of Emergency and the misuse of constitutional amendments serve as stark examples of how they prioritized selfish interests over democratic values,” Khalsa charged.
Senior BJP leader Pramod Kapahi further alleged that Congress harboured animosity toward Dr Ambedkar. “From ensuring his defeat in elections to obstructing his efforts within the Constituent Assembly, Congress consistently hindered Ambedkar’s mission to create provisions that would uplift backward classes and ensure holistic development,” he remarked.
Prominent Minority Morcha leaders present in the event were Santokh Singh (general secretary), Gurdeep Singh (district president), Surjit Singh (chief spokesman), Joginder Singh (district president – border), Surjit Singh (Mandal president), Jasmeet Singh, Deedar Singh, Harpaul Singh (vice president), Hardeep Singh, Billa Singh, Harpaul (block president), Manpreet Singh, Vicky Singh, Harvinder Singh, Ravinder Singh, and Bitti Singh.
