Srinagar, May 2: National Conference leader and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of avoiding assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir for fear of facing voters.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function in Anantnag, he alleged that the BJP is not interested in holding Assembly elections in J&K and only wants to focus on Parliament and Panchayat elections.
“I do not see any elections. They (BJP) are interested in Parliament and Panchayat elections but do not want Assembly polls. They have no courage to face the people. We are not ready to beg for the Assembly elections, let them hold elections when they want,” he said.
Omar also suggested that the Election Commission of India (ECI) may not have received the go-ahead from the Centre to hold Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
“The Election Commission of India has not taken a decision in the past few years, and it decides in consultation with the Centre whenever it makes any decision. It is apparent that the Centre has not given the green signal to the Election Commission because BJP is not ready to face elections. The Central Government has not given the green signal to the Government,” he added.
When asked why political parties are not taking to the streets to demand elections, he countered: “Why are not people coming out on the streets to voice their grievances and demand changes if they are suffering and facing problems?”
