SRINAGAR, June 22: Around two dozen Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) workers and activists today courted arrest here while raising their protest against the steep hike in the prices of essential commodities across the country.
As part of the country wide programme, BJP workers and activists assembled at the Press Enclave here and raised protest against the Government for its alleged failure to check the prices of the essential commodities. The protesters said that the Government is adding to the miseries of the common masses by increasing the prices of the commodities.
The protesters while carrying the party flags resorted to vociferous sloganeering and demanded that the essential commodities should be available to the people at the cheap rates. The protesters were also carrying banners and placards in their hands and police faced a tough time in controlling them.
After resorting to high pitch sloganeering at the Press Enclave, the protesters wanted to march through the commercially important Lal Chowk area in order to lodge their protest. However, this was not allowed by the posse of police present there to thwart any untoward.
The restrictions imposed by the police were countered by the protesters and there were heated arguments from both the sides. After failing to reach the city centre, the BJP workers and activists courted arrest.
