Birth anniversary of Indira Gandhi celebrated

JAMMU, Nov 19: Several functions were organised by the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) and other district and block units besides frontal organisations of the party, in connection with the 96th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi across the State today.
Congress activists organised a function at the PCC headquarters Shahidi Chowk here and paid their floral tributes to their leader Late Indira Gandhi. While paying tributes, the Congress leaders (speakers), described Late Mrs Gandhi as a dynamic  and visionary leader who remained committed to the secular  and socialist ideals of the party  and worked for the welfare of the poor  and downtrodden in the country. She launched various programmes for the upliftment of the poor and the weaker sections of the society. The country progressed on all the fronts under her leadership. She sacrificed her life for the unity  and integrity of the country.
They further said that Late Gandhi was bold in her decisions  and she led the country to victory during 1971 war, leading to creation of Bangladesh and the surrender of over 90,000 Pakistani soldiers before the Indian forces. Ignoring the threats of United States of America. She brought into existence the historical Shimla Agreement, which committed Pakistan for settlement of all outstanding issues through bilateral dialogue. She successfully handled the foreign policy  and remained the chairperson of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), leading the country to the heights in the community of nations.
The speakers pledged that Congress workers are committed to safeguard the interests of the nation by educating the masses about the designs of the divisive forces who are posing a threat to the unity  and integrity of  the nation and the State.
Prominent among those present included Ex-MP Dharam Paul Sharma, MP Madan Lal Sharma, Th Hari Singh, Gurmukh Singh, Mohd Sharief Niaz (Dy Leader CLP), Mula Ram, Ravinder Sharma-MLC, Khem Lata Wakhloo, Kanta Bhan, Shiv Dev Singh, Parkash Sharma (Ex-MLA Samba), Anil Chopra, Bharat Gandhi and others.
In yet another function held at PCC headquarters Srinagar, the Congress leaders and activists paid their rich triobutes to late Indira Gandhi. The function was   presided over by Mohd Muzaffar Parray, senior vice president of PCC.  Prominent among others present included Mohd Anwar Bhat, Ghulam Nabi Mir Lasjan, Mohd Abdullah, Indu Pawar (MLA & president Pradesh Mahila Congress), Abdul GHani Khan, Shameema Sopori, Shamima Iqbal and Shameema Khan.
While remembering Late Gandhi, the Congress leaders and activists paid rich and floral tributes to the former Prime Minister  and recalled her sacrifices for the nation. They said the iron lady made the country strong, vibrant and powerful by her political maturity, experience and love for the country. They also referred to her 20 point programme launched in the country and nationalization of the banks.
Congress Seva Dal organised a function in this connection here in  Jammu  and paid floral tributes to late India Gandhi. Balwinder Singh Sambyal, State chief organizer highlighted the achievements of Late Gandhi and distributed sweets and fruits among the inmates of `Kusht Rogi Ashram’ at Bhagwati Nagar here. S K Bhagat, Dr M L Rao, Devinder Sharma, Anil Sharma, J K Koul, Rajni Sharma, Sanjeshwar Singh and S S Jamwal were also present.
At Vijaypur in Samba, a function was organised by the Congress  workers under the leadership of Babbal Gupta, district vice president. The speakers and others present on the occasion paid their floral tributes to late Gandhi. They also distributed sweets on the occasion.
J&K Freedom Fighters Association also organised a function at DBN School Mubarak Mandi to pay tributes to  Late India Gandhi and Maharani Laxmi Bhai. Commissioner JMC, Kiran Wattal was the chief guest on the occasion. The speakers including Ved Gandotra, Rajinder Kakkar, Suresh Sharma, Indu Puri  and others threw light on the role and achievements of both the personalities  and paid their rich tributes.
National Panthers Party leader and member NIC Prof Bhim Singh in his memorial lecture on Mrs Gandhi’s birthday, described her as highly visionary leader  in the Asian continent who had demonstrated courage  and wisdom in her victory as well as in her defeat. The NPP leader said it was India Gandhi who constituted Mukherjee Commission to spot the killings of 4 students in Jammu in 1966. Mrs Gandhi appointed him ( Prof Bhim) as Pradesh Youth Congress leader in the State in 1973. Prof Singh recalled her contributions including 20-point programme, role in creation of Bangladesh and nationalization of banks.
