JAMMU, Mar 29: In a bid to mollify senior faculty in Medical Education Department, which is apparently annoyed following the move to ban private practice, the State Government is mulling to enhance their pay scale at par with the Medical Colleges in neighbouring States and Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Science (SKIMS), Srinagar.
Government is preparing a comprehensive proposal for reviewing pay structure of faculty in Government Medical Colleges here and Assistant Surgeons of different grades in the Health Department also to bring their grades at par with SKIMS and neighbouring States, authoritative sources informed the Excelsior.
The proposal is likely to be finalized within a month for placing it before the State Cabinet for its final approval and then implementation of the same, sources added.
For the purpose, sources said, the concerned authorities are studying the pay scale of faculty in different Government Medical Colleges in neighbouring State as well as of SKIMS Srinagar and preparing a comparative study to further work out financial implications and other aspects in this regard.
Even as main object of the entire exercise is to appease senior faculty in Government Medical College Jammu and Government Medical College Srinagar, who are annoyed over the move to ban their private practice, the Department of Health and Medical Education is, however, preparing a comprehensive proposal for pay revision by including Assistant Surgeons of A as well as of B Grades in Health department also, sources informed.
Pertinent to mention here that Medical Teachers Association (MTA) Jammu has announced not to join practice in the proposed Evening Clinics at GMC Jammu and GMC Srinagar. Even as MTA claimed that existing infrastructure in Government Medical Colleges here was not adequate for starting Evening Clinics, which would only create more chaos and sufferings to the patients, sources said that the medical faculty is particularly annoyed over move to ban their private practice after becoming the Head of Departments.
A section of senior doctors is learnt to be even exploring option to quit the Government job and join private institutions in wake of private practice ban. Such a situation would not only affect health care services in Government hospitals but also threaten de-recognition of some Medical courses in GMC Jammu and Srinagar.
Sensing gravity of the situation and genuineness of the demand for grade revision, the Government is working out on the proposal and the matter is all set to be speeded up after conclusion of the ongoing Budget session of State Legislature, sources said.
