NEW DELHI, Aug 30: Senior Congress leader and Supreme Court Lawyer, Ashok Bhan today resigned from membership of Apex Committee on Kashmiri migrants constituted by J&K Government in 2009.
In a statement issued here today, Mr Bhan said that State Government led by National Conference has failed to mitigate the sufferings of the displaced Pandits from Valley and it was pursuing the policy and agenda of exclusion of this aborigine Kashmiri community to appease the elements inimical to pluralistic society more particularly in the Valley. By the forced exodus of Hindu religious minority Kashmir’s demographic profile is already shattered and no serious campaign / effort is in place to reverse the same, he added.
Mr Bhan said restoration of plural socio-political ethos is the first task of any responsible Government. The previous PDP –Congress combination has set the agenda for the dignified return with the required pace, emphasis and commitment. But this Government has miserably failed for the reasons, either it does not have the ideological commitment or it is incompetent, he added.
Making a scathing attack on Government led by Omar Abdullah Mr Bhan said the Apex Committee was tasked to help it for implementation of 6000 employment package, protection of temples and shrines by an appropriate Act of Legislature, return and rehabilitation policy formulation besides building confidence in the KP community for the safe and dignified return to Valley and solving their other related issues but the Government miserably failed in this task.
However an official spokesman said that Mr Bhan ceased to be the Apex Committee member as he had not attended the last three meetings. He said during the last Apex Committee meeting chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah it was decided that the members who fail to attend two consecutive meetings of the Committee without any reason will be disqualified and Mr Bhan out of four meetings held by Apex Committee since its formation had only attended one meeting. He said Mr Bhan is among six members of the Committee who cease to be its member for abstaining from two consecutive meetings.
