Bhaiya Dhooj celebrated with religious fervour, gaiety

JAMMU, Nov 15: Bhaiya Dhooj, Hindu festival of brothers and sisters was celebrated with full religious fervour and gaiety across the Jammu region today.
As per a tradition on the day sisters are applying Tilak on the forehead of their brothers and praying for their long life. The married sisters visit the houses of their brothers to offer prayers and apply Tilak on their forehead besides praying for their long life.
Even sisters married at far off places also try to keep the date by visiting their brothers’ residences on the day.
There was heavy rush of traffic on the city roads today as almost all women were on their way to their maternal houses to celebrate Bhaiya -Dhooj with their brothers. Even traffic jams of long duration were also witnessed at different places in the city today on account of Bhaiya Dhooj.
The festival was also celebrated in different orphanages where grand functions were organized on the occasion of Bhaiya Dhooj and the girls applied Tilak on the foreheads of their brothers who are also the inmates of these orphanages.
One such function was held at Orphanage Ambphalla where girl inmates of the Ashram applied the Tilak on the forehead of their brothers and performed the traditional pooja.
Later, the speakers threw light on the significance of the Bhaiya Dhooj saying the festival strengthens the bonds of love between sisters and brothers. The festival has religious as well as social importance, they added.
