KATHUA, July 23: People of village Berail in Panchayat Parnala of tehsil Billawer are forced to cross the Bhinni river during floods on the risk of their lives.
The people including the women and children are risking their lives while crossing the Bhinni river in rainy season.
More than 200 families living in the village have no other road link to the village. The school going students have to remain confined to their houses when the river is in spate.
An ex Sarpanch Akhtar Ali said that with hard efforts the then CM, Mufti Mohammed Sayeed laid the foundation of a bridge 14 years earlier. But no work was started on it till date. Now the State Government also sanctioned nearly Rs 6 crore but the work has not been started again. The villagers are demanding the construction of bridge at an earliest so that no untoward incident takes place.
The villagers have also suffered human loss and loss of property in past years due to flash floods in the river. The Bhinni river creates a havoc for them when in spate. A protection wall was also raised by Flood Control Department to protect the village by spending lakhs of rupees but it was washed away in flash floods due to sub standard work under taken by Flood Control Department. Later the Government has not taken any initiative to repair the protection wall on the bank of the river.
