SRINAGAR, Aug 21: Senior PDP leader and former Member of Parliament, Dr Mehboob Beg today hoped that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi would act and walk the path laid out by Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
“We must realize that a conflict with the neighbour is in nobody’s interest and talks with a view to iron out the differences are the only way forward,” he said in a statement, issued here today.
“It is not as if the present dispensation has to pull-out a new trick from the bag. They have to follow the path shown by Late Atal Bihari Vajpayee and vigorously pursued by Mufti Mohammad Sayeed,” he added
Beg pointed out that the UPA-1 also followed the same path and the people of J&K did have periods of peace filled with hope and forward movement. “Mufti Mohammad Sayeed proved that things could move in a positive direction, routes were opened, L K Advani, the then Deputy Prime Minister talked to the Hizbul as well, Vajpayee showed willingness to resolve issues, so did President Musharaf. The ‘four point formula’ mooted by President Musharaf was a workable solution and the willingness from Vajpayee meant we were agonizingly close to clinching the issue,” he said and regretted that the political landscape, however, changed dramatically.
“Both, Modi and Imran Khan can take a lesson out of the history between Vajpayee and Musharaf and the path adopted by UPA-1 and move forward. The suffering and uncertainty in Kashmir needs to end and Modi and Imran Khan enjoy enough confidence of their respective Nations to make it happen,” Beg concluded.
