Srinagar, Feb 23: Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, Abdul Gani Mir, today asked his policemen to show sensitivity while dealing with juveniles in the State.
“Our society as a whole especially parents, teachers and religious leaders need to come together cohesively to contain juvenile delinquencies and police officers should exhibit more sensitiveness while dealing with juveniles,” Mir said at the valedictory function on one day workshop on introduction of new law on juvenile justice at Police Headquarters here.
The workshop was organized by a Non Governmental Organisation, Voice for Rights, working for protection of human rights in collaboration with J&K Police in which about 200 police officers participated.
The IGP said that police has an important role in rehabilitating the children who are involved in breaking any law and these children need more care and protection.
Earlier in the morning while inaugurating the workshop Deputy Inspector General of Police, CKR S A Mujtaba said that they need to emphasize on reformation and rehabilitation of the juvenile delinquents so that they don’t grow as adult criminals but as normal persons.
The first session of the workshop was dedicated to introduction of new law on Juvenile Justice known as Jammu and Kashmir Children Care and Protection Act, 2013 by Bharti Ali.
Ali also explained the provisions of the act as well as intricacies of child friendly policing, standards and practices. Later he also cleared some doubts and explained other details of the act to the audience during the interactive session.
In the second session two documentaries were screened, one on the Juvenile Justice Act and the other on rehabilitation of children in conflict with law.
The Chairperson of Voice for Rights Deepika Singh Rajawat said that the workshop was held to promote a better understanding of child rights to sanitize the stake holders towards protection of rights of the children and to encourage participation of civil society and public spirited citizens in Child Rights Movement through the thoughtful lectures of the resource persons and screening of a documentary on children during the programme.
