BB Cantt Board begins levying ‘property tax’

SRINAGAR, June 9: As the bills for the property tax were sent to the locals living in the jurisdiction of the Badami Bagh Cantonment Board last year also, the Cantonment Board has finally begun the process of levying Property Tax on residential as well as commercial establishments.
The locals in Sonwar, Indira Nagar, Batwara and Shivpora areas of Srinagar said that the Cantonment Board has sent them tax bills for the ongoing year on their properties.
A local living in one of the mentioned area received a bill of Rs 25000 from April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022, for the civic facilities which the Cantonment Board provides.
The bills have been issued by the Cantonment Board under the “Section 66(a) Cantonment Act 2006. However, the locals said that they will not be paying the tax.
In December 2018, the locals said, the Cantonment Board asked them to vacate the 500-meter radius area around the Cantonment
Locals said that the Cantonment Board has been charging sanitation fees from the locals over the years “but the condition of roads and other civic amenities in the area continues to be poor.”
Also in February this year, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir had issued a notification imposing Property Tax through urban local bodies in their respective areas across Union Territory.
