SRINAGAR, Aug 29: The Baramulla town in North Kashmir is struggling with the open drainage and the lack of parking facility due to the callous approach of the authorities even as it was promised that the necessary works would commence soon.
The locals in the town told Excelsior that even after the passage of over 20 days now, no works have been taken up by the Beacon regarding the laying of slab on the open drainage passing through the main market.
As per details, some time back, the Beacon had laid a slab of the drainage, however, after few days, the slab collapsed resulting in resentment among the locals.
Following that, the matter was taken up with the higher-ups which asked the R&B to demolish the existing slab while the Municipality was asked to carry out de-silting.
“R&B did its work so did the Municipality while as the Beacon which was given the work of laying a fresh slap covering the open drainage has not done a thing so far,” locals said while adding that more than 20 days have passed and there is no headway in this regard.
Locals said that Baramulla is one of the ancient towns in Kashmir and it had been left unattended by the district administration. “Time and again the matter has been taken up with the authorities but to no avail,” the locals said.
The Chairman of Municipal Council Baramulla Tawseef Raina told Excelsior that they are currently carrying out the de-silting of the drainage and after that work will be taken up by the Beacon which will then complete the same.
“We have completed a major portion of it and now we are cleaning it near the fire station; once that is done the Beacon will carry it forward for completion; if it would have been under our control, we would have completed it way back,” he said.
The Beacon authorities could not be contacted for their version on the delay in completing the works on the drainage in the town.
On the other hand, the construction work of the designated parking in the town near the Noor-ul-Huda market has not been started yet even as the spot was designated for the purpose last year; however, the start of the construction works has been witnessing undue delay
The MC Chairman said that there was some issue concerning the land acquisition which has been sorted now and that the concerned officials have been asked to come up with a design and at the same time, its DPR has also been approved.
“Lack of parking space in the town is causing inconvenience to the general public as well as the commuters who visit the town for different purposes,” the locals said.
