JAMMU, Jan 31: Padma Shree Balwant Thakur was honoured by the World Forum for art and culture for his contributions to theatre and peace building at the Expressions Summit-2025, held at the International Centre of Art of Living in Bengaluru.
Thakur was recognised for his work in using theatre to promote peace in Jammu & Kashmir through his initiative BHAAV-Parivartan.
Thakur’s efforts have played a key role in reviving the traditional theatre form, Bhand Pather, and in restoring community life in Kashmir.
Over the past three years, he has trained 60 young playwrights and directors, leading to the production of 60 plays in the Bhand Pather style, performed across Kashmir.
Additionally, he has produced two Urdu plays, “Choona Hai Aasmaan” and “Parvaaz,” in Jammu, which were staged in districts such as Poonch, Rajouri, and Udhampur.
“Choona Hai Aasmaan” highlights the struggles of a young man trying to lead a progressive life amidst the chaos caused by anti-national elements. The play emphasizes the importance of peace for growth and development.
The World Forum, known for setting 12 Guinness World Records and involving millions of artists globally, praised Thakur for enriching Indian theatre.
With over 6000 national and international cultural events under his belt, he has revolutionized the cultural scene in Jammu & Kashmir. His work spans experimental theatre, children’s theatre, and theatre for social change. Thakur has also showcased Jammu & Kashmir’s vibrant culture worldwide, with his Natrang group setting records at the G20 conference.
Thakur’s career also includes significant cultural leadership roles, such as Secretary of the J&K Academy of Art and Cultural Relations, and Cultural Diplomat for India in South Africa and Mauritius.
