NEW DELHI, Jan 12: Eminent theatre director from J&K, Padamshree Balwant Thakur featured here today in the programme ‘dialogue with director’ at Rabindra Bhawan in the National Theatre festival being organised by National Academy of Music, Dance and Drama (Sangeet Natak Akademi) here.
Moderated by eminent theatre director CR Jambe and coordinated by Suman Kumar, Deputy Secretary (Drama) Sangeet Natak Akademi Delhi, Balwant spoke at length about his 35 years of journey of theatre with particular reference to his approach towards children theatre.
Credited for having written over one dozen children plays, Balwant has established a unique identity of children theatre both in content and form. His popular plays include ‘Aap Hamare Hain Kaun’, ‘Mere Hisse Hi Dhoop Kahan Hai’ ‘Hum Hain Naa’ ‘Rang Badalti Duniyan’, ‘Udaan’ and ‘Choona Hai Aasmaan’.
In the programme ‘dialogue with director’ Balwant Thakur, the directors, theatre practioners, cultural activists coming from all over India participated in the evocating discussions and the queries raised by them were affectively answered by Balwant Thakur.
Sangeet Natak Akademi, is organizing Natya Samagama – a festival of diverse cultural expressions in Meghdoot theatre complex, Rabindra Bhavan, Delhi from January 9 to 17, 2016. The festival will feature plays in different languages, folk, ritual, traditional, Sanskrit theatre performances, discussions, theatre music and an exhibition on theatre.
Being decorated with the highest honor in performing arts, Balwant is credited as the youngest theatre director of India who has participated in over two hundred National Theatre Festivals as director. His outstanding visual poetics on stage like ‘Ghumayee’ ‘Bawa Jitto’ ‘Suno Eh Kahani’ ‘Chauraha’ and ‘Mahabhoj’ have vibrated the theatre scene of North India.
Credited for bringing Dogri theatre to the National and International limelight, he has been highly instrumental in creating a new cultural renaissance in the J&K State. He was conferred Padamshree by President of India in 2013. He worked as Secretary J&K Academy of Art Culture and Languages for eight years. Widely traveled Balwant held his presentations in Thailand, Singapore, London, Oxford, Berlin, Frankfurt (Germany), Italy, Moscow, Yoroslov, Belgrade, St. Petersburg, Turkey, Denmark, Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhaabi and Dhaka.
