NEW DELHI, Dec 6:
Congratulating the newly elected MLCs under Panchayat quota, Union Health Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad expressed gratitude to the Panchayat members of J&K for their massive participation in the recently concluded elections.
Conveying deep appreciation to the Panchayat members for their determination and urge to contribute towards upliftment of people and promote ‘need & expectation’ based development at the grass-root level, Mr Azad thanked them for ensuring resounding victory of all the coalition candidates.
“Victory of coalition candidates in these elections is, in fact, victory of Panchayati Raj System”, he said adding that this has vindicated the stand of Congress party to give more powers to the panchayats’.
Expressing satisfaction on the fact that Panchayat members have reposed confidence in the coalition candidates, he said that this has put added responsibility on the coalition Govt to espouse the cause of empowering the Panchayati Raj institutions in the state. He hoped that coalition Govt will redouble its efforts to put in place a strong and meaningful system of Panchayati Raj in the State.
He said that Congress party under the leadership of late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had given a remarkable model of ‘grassroot democracy’ to the country in the form of 73rd Amendment, that stands testimony for its commitment to Panchayati Raj institutions.
In keeping with its policy of strengthening democracy at the grassroot level, Mr Azad said that Congress party stands firm on its commitment to give more powers to the Panchayats &  grant reservation to SCs, STs and women  in J&K and to achieve this end every possible endeavor will be made by the party.
