Azad, Dwivedi to attend Srinagar convention: Prakash

JAMMU, May 17: Union Minister for Health Ghulam Nabi Azad, All India Congress Committee general secretary and party’s Chief spokesperson, Janardan Dwivedi (MP), said to be a trusted Lieutenant of AICC president Sonia Gandhi and former Union Minister M L Fotedar, are participating in the crucial Kashmir convention of the Party being held at Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC), Srinagar on May 19.
The significant of this important political activity is viewed by the political analysts much more than the routine process of adopting a resolution by nearly 350 Congress delegates, authorising AICC president Sonia Gandhi to nominate J&K PCC president. Mr Dwivedi, who is also considered to be a think tank of the party and observer from the Party high command is likely to sound a clear message among all rank and file of the party in the State to shun factional behavior and turn into a single disciplined unit of the party at all levels. The convention may also take review of the entire political scenario in the State.
Senior CWC member and party in-charge for J&K, Mohan Prakash, told the Excelsior that this convention has great importance because it is being held after long time. It should have been held earlier. An important political resolution will be adopted and passed in this one day convention. Though he avoided to give any hint about this resolution but said that after the conclusion of the convention you will come to know about it.
“Unity and discipline in the party will be clear message to all the partymen in the State. No factionalism behaviour, as already sounded by the AICC president in strong words, will be tolerated any more in the party. All the party people from all blocks, districts and provinces will be seen at the single platform from May 19 onwards and for this reason, the significance of this crucial meeting is much more”, Mr Prakash maintained.
Responding to a question, CWC Member said besides Mr Dwivedi and Mr Azad, he himself will be attending the meeting. Soz is the sitting party president and so he has to be there. Invitations have also been extended to former Union Ministers M L Fotedar and Dr Karan Singh. Over 350 Congress delegates including sitting Ministers, legislators, former Ministers, MPs, district presidents and at least one representative from each Block will be participating in this convention. As per the procedure, the Congress delegates, reposing faith on their leader Sonia Gandhi, would authorize her ( AICC president) to nominate the J&K PCC president. After the formal announcement of the new PCC president, the PCC will also be framed shortly. Though he avoided to give any time frame for it but maintained that this exercise will be completed in consultation with PCC Chief and Ghulam Nabi Azad besides other important functionaries.
Sources in the party disclosed that a consensus has been reached on the name of Prof Saifuddin Soz and he is likely to emerge as the choice of the AICC for the second consecutive term as PCC Chief. Prof Soz is arriving in Srinagar from the Union capital tomorrow. PCC vice president and coordinator of the convention Ghulam Nabi Monga said though invitations have been extended to the Union Minister and former Sadr-e-Riasat Dr Karan Singh and former Union Minister M L Fotedar but they have not confirmed their participation so far. He said, “We have made arrangements for 350 delegates in the SKICC Hall and programme will commence at 11.30 on Saturday”, Mr Monga added.
