AYUSH and modern medicine

Sir,
Some of the concerns expressed by Dr Arun Mitra in his article titled-‘ Mixing AYUSH with modern medicine’ [Daily Excelsior, dated January 24th ] are undoubtedly realistic and genuine. Though ‘National Medical Commission Bill’ has been referred to standing committee after hue and cry in upper house for further consultation and analysis yet there are many concerns which need to be addressed in public perception which include revamping of Medical Council of India [MCI] and proposed bridge course for AYUSH graduates.
National Medical Commission bill is not only ill conceived and ill advised but also last nail in the coffin of AYUSH systems in general and for Ayurveda in particular . In case modern health care is to be delivered by AYUSH practitioners who is going to deliver Ayurvedic/Unani and Homeopathic health care ?Symbolizing typical hypocrisy,on the one hand Modi Govt has undertaken various initiatives for the upliftment of Ayurveda but on the other hand proposed legal amendment is quite contrary and against larger interests of Ayurvedic practice and perception in the country. Logically speaking ,each and every curative system has to sustain and nurture on its own basis and proposed supplementation with modern system is against the fundamental essence of AYUSH systems. The very credibility and accountability of Ayush systems is being made questionable. In the backdrop of proposed bill what is the logic of then having vast infrastructure of ISM institutions which include dispensaries, hospitals, colleges and pharmaceuticals in both private and public sector ? What will be the fate of moto- providing various health care coverage under one roof to ailing masses under National rural health mission ?The proposed bill has got sufficient basis which will precipitate professional anarchy and misadventure-all at the cost of suffering ailing masses.
Yours etc…
Dr. H.N.Patwari,
former Deputy Director, Ayurveda.
