JAMMU, Aug 20: An auto-rickshaw driver was shot at by three miscreants just few meters away from police check point during broad-day light at Bikram Chowk area, falling under the jurisdiction of Nehru Market police post.
However, police is facing manifold problems to trace the culprits as the CCTV camera installed at Bikram Chowk is non-functional for the past some time.
As per police sources, an auto-rickshaw driver identified as Ranjeet Singh (45), son of Dayal Singh of Satwari near Jammu Airport, was on its way to Satwari from Jewel area in his auto bearing registration number JK02AX-2690, when three motorcycle borne youth intercepted him at Bikram Chowk and opened fire at him.
The incident happened just few meters away from the check post manned by Nehru Market police post.
After committing the offence, the miscreants managed to escape from the spot on their motorcycle towards Panama Chowk, as at the time of incident, no cop was present at the check-point.
Eyewitness said that “Had police been present at the check-post, the assailants would not have fled from the scene of crime”, sources stated.
The victim with bullet injury in his left leg was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) by Traffic cops and locals in a private vehicle, where he was undergoing treatment, when reports last came in.
Police sources said that the CCTV camera installed at Bikram Chowk is defunct for the past sometime. Due to this, the police is facing problems to trace the vehicle used in the offence and the culprits, they added.
According to preliminary investigation, it came to the fore that the auto-rickshaw driver was shot at over some old rivalry.
A case under relevant Sections has been registered at Nehru Market police post in this regard and investigation started to ascertain the exact reason behind this incident.
However, no arrest was made till late night.
