JAMMU, Nov 18: Authorities at the Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu and Shri Maharaja Gulab Singh (SMGS) Hospital today carried out an extensive inspection of lockers used by staff, students and doctors amid heightened security protocols.
The exercise, conducted under tight supervision, follows recent revelations of doctors being linked to a major terror module busted earlier this month. The arrest of several medical professionals in connection with the module, a car blast near Delhi’s Red Fort on November 10, and the recovery of an AK-series rifle and other ammunition from a doctor’s locker at GMC Anantnag on November 8 prompted a renewed emphasis on internal security in medical institutions across Jammu and Kashmir.

GMC Jammu Principal Dr Ashutosh Gupta said the ongoing drive involves collecting keys from all locker holders and verifying each storage unit before re-allotment. “This is part of a routine exercise aimed at maintaining transparency. We have a locker logbook system in place, and the checks are conducted to ensure everything is properly documented,” he said.
Similar inspections have simultaneously been taken up at SMGS Hospital as part of a coordinated security review across premier health institutions in the region.
Last week, the authorities completed an identical verification exercise at GMC Srinagar and SMHS Hospital, where personal lockers were identified, labelled and inventoried to tighten internal monitoring mechanisms.
Officials added that such precautionary measures are likely to continue periodically as part of the administration’s efforts to reinforce safety within critical public health establishments.
