SAMBA, Oct 11: The footbridge built in Karad Panchayat of Sumb block of district Samba is on the verge of collapse and often accidents take place on this bridge. The bridge connecting many villages like Peyur and Karad Leyan, Bagoon, Hardul is a lifeline for the area as it connects them to rest of the district.
About 35 years ago this bridge was built on the Basantar river which flows through Karad village, but now the condition of this bridge has become so bad that it can collapse at any time and any major catastrophe can take place. The wood that has been used to build the security wall of this bridge has broken at many places. The wood installed in the wall has also broken and now people have to pass through the bridge with no security wall, which can endanger the lives of passers by.
The former Sarpanch of the Panchayat, Ranjit Singh Neetu, said that he has met the officials of the PWD many times to demand the repair of this bridge, but no one got the bridge repaired. Only people were given assurances but due to their failure to repairs the bridge, people’s lives have been put to grave risk.
He demanded that the bridge should be repaired at the earliest so that no major accident is seen in the coming time.
When contacted Darshan Kumar Kaith, Executive Engineer, Road and Building Department, said that Department has been informed by the people, so we will soon make a project report and send it to the higher officials for repairing of the bridge. The repair work of the bridge will be done and people will get rid of this problem, he added.
