JAMMU, Dec 3: Association of Timber Industries (ATI) has demanded a parking facility for commercial vehicles under upcoming flyover of Jammu-Akhnoor Highway on Canal Road to load-unload the goods, particularly timber coming for commercial purposes from other States.
Addressing a press conference, here today, Vice President of ATI, Puneet Jamwal said that Akhnoor Road is traditional-hub for Timber and Hardware market. With the upcoming flyover over the existing roads, the by lanes would become congested and might become a hurdle for commercial activities, he added.
Jamwal maintained that there is need of parking for commercial vehicles and big containers as there is no such provision for the same on the road, which would be more populous when locals use it after flyover construction work is complete.
“Akhnoor road is basically known as an old timber market and is a well known hub of the hardware market. The goods imported from various parts of country as well abroad, come in big containers, which are usually not less than 45 to 50 feet long and there is no provision for parking of such vehicles on new road,” Jamwal explained, adding that most of important timber comes from Gujarat in big containers and there is not a single space on the road for parking of such vehicles.
He said the administration in Jammu as well as traffic policies are very strict and they don’t allow any vehicle to stand on the road so it’s necessity to allocate parking space, where local traders may load-unload their goods.
Appealing to the LG Administration, Mr Jamwal reiterated that there should be some provision for the local traders. “Keeping in view the problem of traders and space constraints on Canal Road, administration should provide parking space for commercial vehicles under flyover,” he said and added that the private vehicle/ small cars may not be allowed to use the allocated parking space, which should be carved our only for commercial activities.
