Arun Jaitley presents Budget 2017-18 in Lok Sabha

The Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs, Shri Arun Jaitley arrives at Parliament House to present the General Budget 2017-18, in New Delhi on February 01, 2017.

NEW DELHI: Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today presented his fourth Budget, the first after demonetisation, in the Lok Sabha shortly after the House assembled for the day and obituary references were made to sitting member and former Union Minister E Ahamed who died early this morning.

The Budget was tabled amid protest from the Opposition, mainly the Congress, which wanted the House to be adjourned for the day as mark of respect to the memory of the departed member. Earlier, the Budget was cleared by the Cabinet at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In a break from the past when the annual financial statement of expenditures and revenues was tabled always towards the end of February and the Budget session also began around that time, this is for the first time that the session and the budget have both been advanced by almost a month.
The practice of presenting the Railway Budget has also been discarded and the Rail budget has been merged with the General Budget. (AGENCIES)
