In a proud moment for Jammu & Kashmir, Aru Village in Pahalgam’s Anantnag district has been recognised with the prestigious ‘Best Tourism Villages of India’ award in the Adventure Tourism Category by the Union Ministry of Tourism. This accolade, announced on World Tourism Day, highlights Aru’s significance not only as a destination for nature lovers but also as a model of sustainable tourism that preserves cultural heritage while promoting community-based tourism. Nestled in the scenic beauty of the Himalayas, Aru village is a haven for adventure enthusiasts. It offers an ideal blend of natural splendour, with its meadows, lush forests, and pristine rivers, along with the thrill of adventure sports like trekking, camping, and skiing. The village is also the starting point for several high-altitude treks, including the popular routes to Kolahoi Glacier and Tarsar-Marsar lakes. This scenic charm, coupled with the adventurous opportunities it presents, makes Aru a deserving recipient of the award in the Adventure Tourism category.
Over 991 applications were received, and Aru emerged as one of the 36 winners. What makes this recognition even more significant is Aru’s commitment to sustainable and community-based tourism. Unlike mainstream tourist destinations, which often fall prey to commercial exploitation and environmental degradation, Aru has maintained a delicate balance between development and conservation. The local community plays a pivotal role in managing tourism activities, ensuring that their cultural heritage and natural resources are preserved for future generations. This community-driven approach not only empowers local residents economically but also fosters a deeper connection between visitors and the culture of the region. The award is expected to further boost tourism in Aru and the surrounding Pahalgam region, providing a much-needed impetus to the local economy. As Aru’s tourism industry flourishes, the village must continue to maintain its focus on sustainability, ensuring that its environmental and cultural integrity remains intact. Aru Village’s recognition underscores the importance of responsible tourism. It serves as an inspiration for other destinations to follow suit, emphasising that growth and preservation can go hand in hand.
