JAMMU, Sept 9:  Police today slapped two major provisions of anti-militancy laws on four police personnel arrested in Rajouri as more evidence poured in about their involvement in terror links, smuggling of weapons and extortions. Police have decided to send all four to Joint Interrogation Centre (JIC), Jammu for sustained questioning to ascertain their involvement in more activities.
Reliable sources said police have added Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and Police Enhancement of Punishment Ordinance in the First Information Report (FIR) registered against the four police personnel initially under Indian Arms Act at Rajouri police station.
They added that the provisions of anti-militancy laws were added in the FIR as it has been established that the police personnel were engaged in unauthorized trade of illegal weapons from Pakistan for use in either militant activities or extortions on the name of militants.
Involvement of one of them-Mohammad Bashir, a Special Police Officer (SPO) son of Inayat Shah, a resident of Dharana, Mendhar, posted in CID (CI) Cell at Mendhar, has been established in militancy. Prior to joining as the SPO, had remained an active Over Ground Workers (OGW) of the militants.
Three other police men, who have been arrested, included Mohammad Yusuf, a Selection Grade Constable son of Mohammad Ayub, a resident of Balakote and posted at Surankote police station, Ashfaq Ahmad son of Mohammad Yusuf, a resident of Nakka Panjgrain, Manjakote, posted as Follower in Kishtwar but had not joined there and Mohammad Zakheer alias Zaheer son of Hussain Mohammad R/o Rajdhani, Bagla in Thanna Mandi, a Follower posted in Rajouri.
Sources said police have finally decided to send all four police personnel to the JIC Jammu for sustained interrogation and ascertain their exact involvement in militancy, extortions and other illegal activities and the period they had been engaged in such acts.
“The police men had either traded weapons from across the border or hidden them during recoveries from the militants to use them for terror activities, extortions etc,” sources said, adding during questioning the arrests police personnel continued to give different versions, which had prompted the police to send them to the JIC.
Police had so far recovered two illegal Chinese pistols from the possession of two police personnel-Ashfaq Ahmad and Mohammad Zakheer, who had disclosed that they had purchased the weapons from Mohammad Yusuf and Mohammad Bashir.
Police didn’t rule out involvement of more police men in the militant activities. However, they said, the names would come out only after sustained interrogation of four arrested persons.
