JAMMU, Apr 11: Army has renovated the popular Gujjar Mandi Chowk War Memorial where Rajouri Day celebrations are commemorated with ‘Wreath Laying Ceremony’ and many civil and military dignitaries along with selected eminent persons pay homage to the martyrs who made the supreme sacrifice protecting the honour and integrity of Rajouri.
Over a period of time, the Memorial required renovation, upkeep and maintenance as utilisation of this Chowk for various rallies and demonstration had further demoted its significance.
Hence, in a step to improve the present state of the Chowk and restore its glory, an initiative was taken by Ace of Spades Div to renovate the Memorial for Rajouri Day Celebrations-2019 with the help of Rotary Club and local populace of Rajouri.
Various improvements at the Chowk like placing fresh slabs with names of martyrs, marble tiling of the complete surface, placing of lights and repair of outer structure along with steel railing has been incorporated.
A handout of the Army stated that Rajouri Day is celebrated every year on April 13 to commemorate the sacrifices of martyrs – both civil and armed forces persons who had laid down their lives for liberation of Rajouri in 1948.
‘Gujjar Mandi Chowk War Memorial’ comprises of slabs with names of all martyrs engraved and placed on the Chowk and a structure constructed to commemorate the history of gallant actions of 2nd Lt Rama Raghoba Rane, who laid down his life while facilitating the Indian Army’s advance to Rajouri which earned him the highest war-time gallantry award, Param Vir Chakra.
