SRINAGAR: In a solemn and poignant ceremony held in this summer capital, the Army on Friday paid rich tributes to former Defence Public Relations Officer (PRO) Major P Purushottam and five brave soldiers, who attained martyrdom in a fidayeen attack on this day in 1999.
Defence Ministry spokesperson Colonel Rajesh Kalia said that a solemn was held at Badami Bagh Cantonment, Srinagar, where all ranks of the Public Relations Office of the Army paid rich tribute to the martyrs on their 18th death anniversary.
He said Major Purushottam, who was posted as PRO (Defence), alongwith five of his comrades bravely fought militants who had launched a fidayeen attack on his office in the evening of November 3, 1999.
“Having been engaged in a hand to hand fight with the militants, Major Purushottam and his colleagues made the supreme sacrifice of their lives while trying to save media persons present in his office,” he said.
He said on the occasion, wreaths were laid on behalf of Mattu JP Singh, Additional Director General (Media and Communication), Directorate of Public Relations (DPR), Ministry of Defence and media fraternity at the memorial in Public Relations Office, Srinagar.
