Army foils infiltration bids

Srinagar, Aug 2: General Officer Commanding 19 Division of Army, Major General R P Kalita today said that for last one year there was surge in the infiltration attempts from across the Line of Control (LoC) but Army foiled majority of these attempts.
The GOC said that after melting of snow there were lot of attempts of infiltration but Army was successful in foiling them. “Lots of militants were present on launch pads who wanted to infiltrate so that is why after melting of snow in the month of May, we saw increase in infiltration attempts”, he said.
Major General Kalita said that the infiltration attempts which were less in Uri and Rampur sectors for last several years saw surge since last one year. “Although in Uri and Rampur sectors, where there were less infiltration attempts until last year, but since September past there too was surge in intrusion attempts”, he said.
The Army Commander said that there are always militants on the launch pads ready for infiltration but their attempts have been foiled. “This year, I am glad to say this that we didn’t allow their attempts of infiltration to succeed. In my area, 60-70 militants anytime are present on launching pads. These numbers are not fixed. They keep varying. But trained militants are always available for infiltration”, he said.
The GOC said that North Kashmir is peaceful and it will remain so. “As far as North Kashmir is concerned, the situation has remained peaceful till now. The area of Abu Dujana was South Kashmir where he was carrying out his activities. The situation will remain peaceful in North Kashmir like it is today”, he said.
About the Fidayeen squads, Major Gen Kalita said that Army has not allowed their infiltration into Kashmir. “It is not easy to say that whether they are Fidayeen or not. It is known only after recovery from the eliminated militants. But so far we have not let them succeed in their infiltration attempts”, he said.
Security forces this evening launched an operation in Sugan village of Shopian district after inputs about presence of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Zeenat Islam.
However, as the 55 RR of Army and SOG Shopian cordoned off the village, residents pelted stones at them. The troops continued the searches of the area but called it off as the militant had fled from the village before the operation was launched.
