SRINAGAR, Sept 20: Army today foiled two infiltration attempts in North Kashmir along the Line of Control (LoC) killing at least 8 infiltrators while one Army jawan was killed.
An Army spokesman said here today that Army has foiled two infiltration attempts by militants from across the Line of Control in Kashmir today.
The spokesman said that Army foiled an infiltration bid by 10-12 militants in Uri sector of North Kashmir and a major operation against them is going on.
The spokesman said that Army foiled an infiltration bid in Nowgam sector along the LoC in North Kashmir in which one soldier was killed and operation against the infiltrated group is going on.
Army sources said that troops in the forward areas at Gorital Lachipora found suspicious movement of a 10-12 militants trying to sneak into Indian territory. He said that in the gunfire exchange, eight intruders were shot dead by Army’s 10 Dogra Regiment.
Sources said that since the bodies are lying in the ravine near the Pakistani forward posts it is difficult to retrieve the bodies as the troops can come under fire if they go nearer. He said that Army does not want to take a chance to retrieve the bodies. He, however, said that they are clearly visible from Indian forward posts.
Sources said that the searches in the area are going on and some of the militants of the group managed to escape towards Pakistan.
Sources said that Pakistani troops fired when Indian troops opened firing on the infiltrators but it was brief exchange of fire.
As the encounter at Uri was underway, another encounter raged at Neeriyan forest area in Nowgam sector of Handwara in Kupwara district between infiltrated militants and Army’s 20 Dogra regiment. One Army jawan Havaldar Madan Lal was killed in the gun battle.
Army sources said that in the morning they saw LoC fence was cut in Nowgam sector. “We launched an operation and we have trapped at around 4-5 militants”, he said.
The sources said that militants opened fire on troops killing one Army jawan. Army has brought reinforcements and now cordoned off more areas to prevent militants from fleeing the area.
The Army along the LoC is on high alert after the attack on Army’s Brigade Headquarter at Uri in which 18 soldiers were killed. The troops have intensified the vigil and patrols along the LoC to foil infiltration attempts.
In the meantime, Army and police raided Sangarwani forest area in Pulwama district after inputs that 5-8 militants of Jaish-e-Mohammad outfit are inside the forest area. As the security forces cordoned off the area, militants fled leaving behind some food stuff.
