SRINAGAR, Sept 28: Army today fired in air in Sanantnagar area of Srinagar and later the whole area was cordoned off as they mistook a motorcyclist as a militant.
Senior police officers rushed to the spot and entire area was cordoned off this afternoon after Army fired several rounds in air as they mistook a motorcyclist as a militant who made a U-turn on Srinagar Bypass.
Sources said that the Army and Para-Military CRPF personnel were conducting surprise checking of the three and two wheelers at Sanantnagar Bypass this afternoon. They were allegedly beating a motorcyclist when another motorcyclist in order to avoid getting beaten by them made a U-turn.
The security personnel mistook him as a militant and fired in air. It led to confusion and army personnel deployed nearby also opened fire causing confusion.
Srinagar Senior Superintendent of Police Ashiq Bukhari, said that there was no evidence of any militant attack on any security forces convoy. He confirmed that the Army’s quick reaction team had fired over a hundred rounds in the air but said that the shootout was “probably the result of some confusion”.
An employee of a motor company was injured in his leg as he was hit by a piece of glass.
This is for the second time that the Army fired at the same place this month as a result of some confusion.
It may be mentioned here that militants carried out a major strike on Srinagar Bypass hardly 100 metres from the place where today’s firing took place in June this year in which 8 Army personnel were killed and 14 others were injured.
