JAMMU:  As violence escalated in the Kashmir Valley with fresh protests, Army chief General Dalbir Suhag today reviewed security situation in the state during his day-long visit.

Gen Suhag this morning arrived at Jammu based 16 Corps at Nagrota and was received by GOC-in-C Northern Command Lt Gen D S Hooda and GOC White Knight Corps Lt Gen R R Nimbhorkar.

“The Army chief reviewed the security scenario and had first hand information on prevailing situation in the state,” defence sources here said.

They said Gen Suhag visited Nagrota, Dharamkund, Reasi and Rajouri during his visit to Jammu region.

He was briefed by all the GOCs about their area of responsibilities and the preparedness to face any challenge besides situation within the districts.

Sources said the Army chief also had detailed review about spill over of terrorism through Pir Panjal ranges as militants may make fresh attempts to sneak into Indian territory.

“Before the closure of passes and onset of winter season, Pakistan may push militants into J&K and many of them are waiting at the launching pads and getting training in camps intact across the LoC in PoK,” they added.

However, the Army chief lauded the role of jawans for maintaining vigil and being alert on the borders vis-a-vis foiling nefarious designs of the enemy.

Sources said Gen Suhag also expressed concern over radicalisation in Poonch, Doda, Rajouri and other hilly regions in the backdrop of Kashmir unrest.

“Grenade attack in Poonch, recent ceasefire violation by Pak, apprehensions of rise in infiltration attempts, over ground workers, highway, quick reaction teams and other areas of concern were discussed threadbare during Army Chief’s visit,” they added.

Pertinent to mention here that an army jawan shot his colleague to death in Rajouri ahead of top brass visit.

Meanwhile Lt Gen Praveen Bakshi, who was already in the town to attend regimental function in Akhnoor, also attended the security review meeting.

Gen Bakshi is slated to be the next Army chief and may take over the command in another three months.

However, Gen Suhag wrapped up his visit in the afternoon.
