Srinagar, Oct 18: Chief of Army Staff General Bipin Rawat today reached here on for two-day visit to review security in Kashmir valley and along the Line of Control (LoC) and celebrate Diwali with the troops.
General Rawat was received by Lt Gen D Anbu, Northern Army Commander and Lt General JS Sandhu, Chinar Corps Commander at Badami Bagh Cantonment.
The chief was briefed by Chinar Corps Commander on the latest operations and updated him on the overall security scenario along the Line of Control as well as in the hinterland.
General Rawat addressed all officers in Badami Bagh Cantonment and complimented them for providing excellent military leadership in the most challenging circumstances. He also commended all ranks for their relentless pursuit towards achieving the objective of bringing in peace and normalcy to the Valley.
The Commanders briefed him about the latest situation in the hinterland and operations conducted during past few months. Army along with other security forces have achieved major successes this year and eliminated over 160 militants so far including 12 top commanders of Hizbul Mujahideen, Jaish-e-Mohammad and Lashkar-e-Toiba. Majority of these militants were killed in last three months after Operation All Out was launched in Kashmir against the militants.
General Rawat was also given detailed briefing about the situation along the LoC and measures taken to counter the infiltration of militants from Pakistan occupied Kashmir. He was given details about the strengthening of counter-infiltration grid that has led to dip in the infiltration of militants into Kashmir.
He was briefed about the intelligence inputs that suggest desperation of militants to infiltrate into Kashmir ahead of winter. He was, however, told that the effective mechanism is in place to counter the enemy designs.
Army chief appreciated effectiveness of the intelligence and operational grids and commended the troops for the excellent operational successes, which had contributed significantly towards a secure environment in Kashmir.
General Rawat is visiting North Kashmir tomorrow to celebrate Diwali with the troops who are away from home defending the LoC. He will also review the security along the LoC where militants are desperately trying to infiltrate ahead of winter.
