Army celebrates Zoji La battle victory

Srinagar, Nov 1: Indian Army today celebrated Zoji La battle victory anniversary at Zo Ji War Memorial in Drass Sector of Kargil district.
Celebrated as Zoji La Day, this day marked 67th anniversary of the Indian Army’s historic win over the Pakistani regulars and infiltrators and helped up recapture the strategic Zoji La – the gateway to Ladakh region, a defence spokesman said.
“This victory ensured that Ladakh remained an integral part of India. The Battle of Zoji La was one of the first wars of the Indian Army in the High Altitude Area. This battle was historic also for the reason that tanks were used for the first tenure at such heights,” he said.
The ‘Zoji La Day’ was conducted by the ‘Golconda Gunners’ under the aegis of ‘Forever in Operation’ Division. “The unit took up the task of renovating the War Memorial which at nearly 12000 feet remains buried under snow for five months in a year,” he said.
The spokesman said the event was attended by Army officers from Drass and Kargil as well as a large number of tourists. However the highlight of the event was the presence of representative of some of the units which had fought the Battle of Zoji La, he added.
