Arms, explosives haul in Kishtwar

JAMMU, July 1: Army and police today busted a major hideout of the militants at Kassain Keshwan forests in Kishtwar district and foiled plot by the terrorists to trigger strikes during holy month of Ramzan and forthcoming Machail Mata ji yatra.
Defence spokesman Lt Col Manish Mehta said the huge cache of arms, ammunition and explosives recovered by Army and police during joint operation had the potential of to be utilized in abetting terrorist activities in the region especially during holy month of Ramzan and the forthcoming Machail Mata yatra.
However, he said, a major tragedy has been averted with timely recoveries of the cache by Army and police.
Recoveries included one AK-56 rifle, two Chinese pistols, two Japan made Kenwood radio sets, one Under Barrel Grenade Launcher (UBGL), 13 hand grenades, nine UBGL grenades, three AK magazines, 423 AK rounds, 20 pistol rounds and some accessories.
After effecting recoveries, Army and police conducted searches in Keshwan forests but no arrests were made from there.
Sources said though the militancy has virtually died down in Kishtwar, some militants and Over Ground Workers (OGWs) were still active in the district planning to revive the militancy and carry out terror attacks.
With the recoveries, Army and police have foiled the militants’ attempt to carry out attacks, they added.
