NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to consider, after four weeks, a plea for appointment of Election Commissioners by a Collegium, including the Prime Minister, Leader of Opposition and Chief Justice of India.
The petition was mentioned by Bharatiya Janata Party leader and lawyer, Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay, before a Chief Justice of India S A Bobde-headed bench.
It sought a direction to appoint Election Commissioners, just like the similar appointment procedure adopted for CBI chief and CVCs. Counsel Upadhyay, today mentioned it before the apex court and stated that the matter had not come up for hearing since September, last year. “We will list it after four weeks,” ruled the apex court .
Mr Upadhayay, in his petition, said that the appointment of Election Commissioners should be made by a Collegium, including the Prime Minister, Leader of Opposition and Chief Justice of India, and thereby the Supreme Court should give appropriate orders and directions in this regard. (AGENCIES)
