JAMMU, Dec 26: Anganwari workers and helpers held a massive sit-in-protest near Press Club, here today under the banner of Anganwari Workers Welfare Association (AWWA), Jammu province, in support of their demands including hike in salary.
Hundreds of Anganwari workers and helpers today assembled at Exhibition Ground and started raising slogans against the Government for ignoring their genuine demands. They were demanding enhancement of the salary of Anganwari workers from present Rs 3500 to Rs 15000 and helpers from Rs 1800 to Rs 10, 000 per month.
The protesting workers were also demanding benefits of pension, EPF and ESI schemes and declaration of Anganwari workers and helpers as Government employees. They demanded the State Government to increase their share at least to Rs 5000 per month, alleging that the Government has failed to pay State share for the last 35 years period since the scheme was enforced in the State in the year 1978.
While addressing the workers, AWWA president, Swarna Choudhary and general secretary, Neelam Sharma, criticized the Government for its anti-workers attitude towards low paid workers, as they are struggling for the last 12 years for their demands like 100% promotions as per seniority list for Anganwari workers, supply of good nutrition quarterly and payment of pending salary, carriage charges and TA/DA.
The speakers reminded the Government that social welfare department is pressurizing them to do six hours duty that too with low honorarioum, besides doing their primary duty like data collection, registration, election duty, etc. The workers from all the districts and blocks participated in the demonstration.
