JAMMU, Dec 21: Amateur Theatre Group (ATG) staged Vasant Dev’s Hindi translation of Govind Purshottam Deshpande’s original Marathi drama ‘Andhar Yatra’, as fourth play in the ongoing Annual Drama Festival at the Abhinav Theatre, here today.
Notwithstanding ATG’s commitment towards serious theatre, today’s production directed by young actor Sunil Prakash Sharma came out as a notch lower in comparison to its earlier performance in September 2017 at the same venue. The cast which comprised of first-timers along with seasoned actors fell short in giving the required depth and gravity to the thought-provoking content of the play which critiqued the dark aspects of the present day power politics that heartlessly appropriates all social institutions for its ends.
Today’s play marked with a high intellectual tone and tenor of the dialogues tested the acting skills of young actors in rendering the subtle nuances with variations in speech, controlled movements. It was only Sunaina Kumari as the main protagonist Vasundhara who left an impact as she was able to carry her role with great ease and control.
Other members of the cast included Anuroop Pathania as Doalt Rao, Mohit Vhob as Sadashiv Rao, Sunil  Sharma as Shripad, Ankit Sharma as Ashwath, Rajan Thakaral as Mahabal and Aman Sangral as Servant. Mushtaq Kak was the production controller, the well-designed set was by Ifra Kak, effective light design by  Mohit Chib, make-up by Shiv Dev Singh,  music by Sanam Sudan and Ankit Sharma assisted in direction.
After the two-day break, which is going to affect the enthusiasm of winter capital’s select theatre enthusiasts used to enjoy interrupted drama festivals, Vemedh Rang Manch will stage Kashmiri play ‘Rovmut Bhatta’ on coming Sunday.
