NEW DELHI, Aug 17: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will chair the North Eastern Council (NEC) meet at Guwahati on 8th of September.
Disclosing this, Union DoNER Minister Dr Jitendra Singh said here that the two – day Plenary Meeting of the North Eastern Council (NEC) will be held at Guwahati on 8th and 9th of September.
The Plenary Meeting will be chaired by Home Minister Amit Shah and co-chaired by DoNER Minister Dr Jitendra Singh. The meeting will be attended by all the Governors and all the Chief Ministers of each of the eight States of the North Eastern region.
This is the first Plenary Meeting of the NEC after the Modi Government began its second term on 30th of May this year. This is also the first-ever tour of Northeast by Amit Shah after taking over as Minister for Home Affairs.
The agenda for the two-day meet was finalized at a joint meeting of the Ministry of Northeast (DoNER) and North-Eastern Council (NEC), presided over by the DoNER Minister.
North Eastern Council, which was established in the 1970s with its Headquarters at Shillong, was given a new orientation by the Modi Government in 2018, in order to enable it to address the emerging requirements of the region and also to develop it as a research hub offering inputs for development projects across the eight States of Northeast. In the recently passed Union Budget of Modi Government 2.0, the allocations for the Ministry of Northeast (DoNER) and the North Eastern Council (NEC) were also hiked.
Living up to the Modi Government’s commitment to raise Northeast at par with more developed regions of India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally attended the Plenary Meeting of NEC at Shillong in 2016 and became the first-ever Prime Minister to have done so in several decades. The new scheme namely, North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS), was also introduced at the behest of Prime Minister Modi.
The forthcoming Plenary Meeting of North-Eastern Council will assess the progress and status of the ongoing and upcoming development projects. It will also take cognizance and address the inputs furnished by the Governors and Chief Ministers of different North-Eastern States.
