Alleged drug peddler escapes from police custody amid protest, stone pelting

JAMMU, Oct 29: An alleged drug peddler escaped from the custody amid protest and stone pelting by the mob on police team in Rajeev Nagar area of Narwal.
As per police sources, on reliable information, a team from Narwal Police Post laid a naka and intercepted a scooty. During checking, police team recovered 500 grams ganja from the possession of the rider and arrested him.
The arrested accused was identified as Edu, son of Ram Singh, a resident of Rajeev Nagar Narwal.
As police team was about to take the alleged drug peddler to Narwal Police Post, a group of persons including family members of the arrested person assembled near Rajeev Chowk and held protest. Some people in the mob also pelted stones on the police team but no one got injured.
Taking benefit of the protest and stone pelting by the mob, the accused managed to escape from the spot by leaving behind his scooty.
Later, senior police officials rushed to the spot. On seeing large police contingent, the protesting people dispersed from the spot.
It is pertinent to mention here that around 5 kilograms of ganja and 7 quintals of poppy straw from Rajeev Nagar area within past fortnight.
To resist the police from performing their legitimate duties against drug menace, the people today held protest and pelted stones on the police team so as to scare them from entering their area.
However, a case under FIR Number 278 under section 8/20 NDPS Act has been registered against the alleged drug peddler Edu and one more case under FIR Number 279 RPC under sections 353, 336, 224, 225 and 147 RPC also stands registered against the protesting people including family members of the alleged drug peddler Edu.
Further investigation into the cases is going on.
