SRINAGAR, Apr 28: Militants this evening fired at a police party in the outskirts of Srinagar city forcing security forces for an alert while a Sarpanch was injured in a militant attack in restive Sopore area of North Kashmir and operations against the militants responsible for the killing of 4 police men on Friday in North Kashmir continued.
Police sources said that a party of Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police had established a naka in Dangerpora Kanipora locality of Nowgam Byepass this evening after they received information about the militant movement in the area.
Driver of a Maruti car was asked to stop by the SOG party in a routine check up during the naka but he didn’t respond and fled. The militants inside the car fired several shots at police party and also threw a grenade that didn’t explode.
No casualty was reported from any side and the militants fled towards Pulwama. Police party rushed after them but could not trace them out.
After the attack on police party, security in Srinagar city has been tightened and police at several places established checking points during which a Maruti was seized from Jehanghir chowk and two of its inmates were detained. They are being questioned.
Militants this evening shot at Sarpanch of village Bomai and a National Conference worker in North Kashmir’s Sopore area. Police sources said that Sarpanch, Ghulam Mohammad Bhat son of Abdul Jamal Bhat was fired at near Ellaquai Dehati Bank Bomai.
Bhat was rushed to Sopore hospital where he was treated for his arm injury. He was discharged from the hospital and taken home under police protection.
Block Medical Officer Sopore, Dr Syed Masood told Excelsior that the Sarpanch was treated for his arm injury in the hospital and is out of danger.
Earlier a Sarpanch of the village and Congress worker Habibullah Mir was shot dead by militants in Bomai Sopore in January this year. His killing led to wave of resignations by Panchs and Sarpanchs in area.
In the meantime, security forces’ massive man hunt in North Kashmir against the militants responsible for the killing of four police men in Sopore on Friday evening continues.
Sopore Police, Special Operations Group of Jammu and Kashmir, 52 Rashtriya Rifles of counter insurgency Kilo Force cordoned off Khai Tangan and Amarpora Tarzu areas in Sopore in search of the militants responsible for the cop killings. The operation was called off after security forces didn’t find any militant presence.
It may be mentioned here that Sopore Police, Special Operations Group of Jammu and Kashmir Police Pattan, 52 and 29 Rashtriya Rifles yesterday conducted operation in Hamray and Tapar Kalan villages in Pattan area of Baramulla and 13 RR of Kilo Force conducted searches in several areas of Hajjan area in adjacent Bandipora district in forests around Wullar lake.
Meanwhile Hizbul Mujahideen has announced a cash reward of Rs 5 lakh to the militants who carried out the attack at Hygam Sopore, killings four cops, Hizbul spokesman, Baleegudin, told a local news agency.
