Airport expansion: Jat Sabha demands adequate compensation for affected families

JAMMU, Oct 11: The All Jammu and Kashmir Jat Sabha has demanded time of at-least six months, a plot at suitable place and adequate compensation to the families whose land is to be acquired for expansion of the Jammu Airport.
The members of the newly appointed All J&K Jat Sabha today visited Jammu Airport area and met with the families whose land is being acquired by the Airport Authority for expansion of the Jammu Airport. Pertinent to mention that many families are reluctant to vacate their houses and land citing very low prices being paid to them and are continuously protesting against the move of the Government.
The Jat Sabha gave a patient hearing to the demands of the aggrieved families and assured them that they will get justice. Through a press communiqué, issued here, the Jat Sabha has said that they welcome the expansion of the Jammu Airport and support every initiative of the Government for the development.
But at the same time, the Jat Sabha urged upon the Government that those who are forced to leave their houses and land for expansion of the Jammu Airport should be given a plot of 10 marlas each for their rehabilitation.
The Jat Sabha further urged upon the Government to provide them at least six months time to vacate their houses and also provide them compensation at par with present construction cost so that they may be able to construct their houses again. The Jat Sabha further urged upon the Government to not order forcible eviction as people are ready to vacate their houses, lands provided they are given adequate time and compensation for the same.
The locals also appreciated the efforts of the Jat Sabha, particularly Ch Vikram Randhawa (MLC) who has been fighting since long for the rights of these people.
The visiting members of the Jat Sabha included former minister S Manjit Singh, former minister Ch Sukhnandan, Taranjit Singh Tony, Ch Vikram Randhawa, Surinder Choudhary (both MLCs) and Dwarika Choudhary, Corporator.
