JAMMU : District Administration of Jammu today imposed ban on rallies as the winter capital observed complete shutdown for the second consecutive day on the AIIMS issue.
“No rally will be allowed either on foot or on vehicles by any organisation or political party during the bandh,” a senior police official here said.
He said the decision was taken in view of yesterday’s clash between BJP workers and members of the Coordination Committee on AIIMS.
However, Jammu observed complete shutdown for second consecutive day demanding full fledged institution but not AIIMS like facilities in the hospital.
The three-day bandh call till August 2 is given by the Coordination Committee on AIIMS supported by various organisations, including traders, transporters. However, expressing anger and demanding AIIMS for Jammu, people observed total bandh while all business establishments were shut.
The activists of Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party also staged protest and burnt the effigy of BJP on the issue.
Commercial vehicles remained off road and schools, colleges witnessed thin attendances. Some of the privates offices and banks also remained closed.
The Coordination Committee on AIIMS had rejected the Centre’s proposal of AIIMS like facilities for Jammu hospital.
Meanwhile, protests also broke out in various parts of the district. Reports from Udhampur, Samba and Kathua said total peaceful bandh was observed in the support. Commuters especially the pilgrims and tourists suffered a lot due to the strike.
President, Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Jammu, Rakesh Gupta said, “there are various apprehensions, which are to be cleared on announcement of AIIMS but by that time, traders will observe complete shutdown for three days and decision further will be taken later depending upon the clarity from the Union Health Ministry.” (AGENCIES)
