Agenda for CSIR

Interacting with the farmers including those from the State, on the occasion of Platinum Jubilee celebrations of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) through DD live, Prime Minister Modi stressed on innovations in research so that a phenomenal change is brought about in the sector of agricultural and horticultural production. The land is shrinking and intensive cultivation and also diversification is the answer to that problem. Water and land management are to be addressed in the background of the constraints with which we are faced. The Prime Minister evinced very keen interest in knowing from two farmers of the State, one from Kishtwar and the other from Bhaderwah how they were finding the cultivation of aromatic plants instead of normal crops on their farms. Both of them said that the diversification had yielded dividends and their income had risen ten times more than what normally they used to have. Congratulating the scientists of IIM Jammu on the occasion for its good work, the Prime Minister dedicated a new rose to the institute which has enhanced scent and could be inducted into commercial activities.
We need to explore the opportunities of diversifying our agrarian pursuits, shift to intensive cultivation and modern techniques of marketing. The example of tulip garden in Srinagar and the aromatic cultivation in Bhaderwah and Kishtwar are the signals that much more can be achieved through research and study. In his address the Prime Minister made a number of suggestions to the CSIR and hopefully these will be taken into consideration aimed at improving our agricultural activities.
