Prime Minister has harkened the DRDO to the task that lies ahead of it as one which cannot wait. In this world of competition, we will be left behind if we do not do things at their proper time. He questioned how come that projects once sanctioned are not brought to completion even after the lapse of 15 or 20 years. The time does not wait for anybody. He lamented that despite the fact that we have talented scientists who have the capability of delivering the goods, we are not able to manufacture what is needed in the defence of the country.
Two main considerations have to be emphasized. One is of completing projects and producing equipment before their time and the second is of providing space to the youth of the country to make their contribution. The time has come when India should lead and not follow. We have the wherewithal to carry forward our scientific and technological pursuits so that we become self sufficient in matters of defence productions. It has to be remembered that India spends vey big portion of her income on purchase of defence equipment from foreign countries because advanced technology is not available in our country. The Prime Minister believes that we have the capability of producing latest defence equipment and not depend on foreign countries. This capability has to be improved and brought to it optimum.
We need to put a stop to the practice of spending enormous money for purchase of defence equipment from foreign countries. Apart from allowing billions of dollars to go to foreign countries, these payments have become the cause of mega scams in which many people get involved and which bring a bad name to the country. The Prime Minister is very right in asking the scientists and technocrats of the country wherever they are, in the DRDO, or IITs or Universities to join their efforts and visions of making the nation self sufficient in defence equipment. Not only that we should become leaders in making new inventions and capturing the market ahead of time.
