The protesters were shouting slogans for release of their leader and suspension of SHO Rehambal. They alleged that their leader was beaten up by Police without any provocation and then arrested at the instance of AFCON management.
The trouble erupted this morning ahead of a scheduled protest by the AFCON workers union when their vice-president Hafiz was taken into custody by the Police.  Alleging that their leader was beaten up by Police, the AFCON workers assembled in front of the office of SSP Udhampur and held a strong demonstration there. Later, they marched towards the DC office and held a protest there.
The protesters dispersed off only after the arrested union leader was bailed out with an assurance by the Deputy Commissioner and SSP to look into their grievances.
According to the SSP Suleman Choudhary, the union leader was taken into preventive custody in the presence of Magistrate to avoid any law and order problem on account of scheduled protest and then a case under Section 309 of RPC was registered against him after he tried to harm himself as well as attack the policemen.
The AFCON workers had scheduled to organize a peaceful protest dharna in support of their demands of releasing PF money.
